Severe dizziness spells can strike anyone at any time and can cause serious issues. Not only are you in danger of harming yourself or others if your whole world starts spinning while you’re driving, your brain health could be in jeopardy as well.
Dizziness is actually the second most common complaint heard inside doctor’s offices, and will occur in 70% of the nation’s population at some point in their lives. Because dizziness issues can be so harmful, it’s important to address them immediately. If you can, visit a trusted urgent care facility to have your symptoms looked at by a professional. If you can’t head to urgent care centers right away, however, there are a few things you can do to at least temporarily treat your dizziness:
- Get off your feet — Dizziness typically occurs when a person is standing, so if you are starting to feel like you’re spinning, lie down on a couch or bed so you can increase blood flow to your brain. Hopefully, after a few minutes, you’ll be less dizzy and you can start feeling better.
- Drink some water — Dehydration is one of the most common causes of dizziness, which is why you should always make sure you have clean water nearby. Try to drink about five eight-ounce glasses of water each day so you’re not dehydrated.
- Eat a banana — Eating a banana or two can help replenish your blood glucose levels, which can cause dizziness if they’re too low. Blueberries, fruit juices, and honey can help with blood glucose levels as well.
- Limit your medication — It’s important to discuss all your medical needs with your doctor, so if you’re thinking you’re taking too many different medications, ask for a pharmaceutical review. Taking too many prescription and over-the-counter drugs can cause intense dizziness spells.
Don’t let dizziness ruin your week, month, or year — start taking care of yourself and seek professional help. If you are dealing with severe dizziness or other health problems that require immediate assistance, head to Island Urgent Care right away.
